Christian discipleship for young adults

Christian young adult discipleship is the process of helping people in their late teens and twenties grow as followers of Jesus — not through curriculum alone, but through mentorship, community, and lived practice suited to that specific stage of life.

Why this age is different

18–28 is its own discipleship season.

Youth ministry works because teenagers are still inside a built-in structure — school, parents, youth group. Established adult discipleship works because life has mostly settled — career, family, a home church. Young adults are in between: making the biggest identity and direction decisions of their life, usually with the least built-in structure to support it. That gap is exactly where discipleship tends to get missed.

What it actually requires

Four things real discipleship needs

Relationship

Mentorship from someone further along, not just a lecture or a curriculum.

Rhythm

Daily practice — Scripture, prayer, conversation — not an annual retreat or occasional event.

Responsibility

Something real to actually do, where your choices have consequences and your growth is visible.

Community

Peers walking the same stretch of road, not just a room full of strangers once a week.

Common questions

Straight answers

What's the difference between discipleship and just going to church?

Going to church is one input among many. Discipleship is the ongoing, relational process of growing to look more like Jesus — it usually includes church, but also mentorship, community, and practice that a Sunday service alone doesn't provide.

Why is discipleship harder in your twenties than in youth group?

Youth group builds community and structure in for you automatically. In your twenties, you have to seek both out — and most young adults underestimate how much intentional effort that takes.

Do I need to already be a mature Christian to be discipled?

No — discipleship is for people who want to grow, not people who already have it figured out. Willingness matters more than where you're starting from.

Can discipleship happen without a formal program?

Yes, in theory — but most people find that without some structure (a mentor, a community, a rhythm), good intentions alone don't produce consistent growth over time.

How does Cross to Life structure discipleship differently than a typical young adults ministry?

Most young adults ministries meet weekly. Cross to Life builds discipleship into daily life for twelve months — shared housing, daily Scripture, weekly mentorship, and a local church cohort — all at once, not spread thin across a single evening a week.
